The 2017 Firebird
Trans Am is Pontiac’s flagship high-performance-oriented, super-premium sports
car or “2017 Firebird Trans Am" convertible.
Reviving the 2017 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am name
used in the late 1960s, the 2017 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is an all-new
vehicle. The previous Firebird Trans Am amounted to a period take on the same
basic concepts, however, with its pursuit of extreme excellent style,
performance, and exclusivity.
Manufactured
from 1967 to present as the V8 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, the first Firebird
Trans Am used a 6.0-liter V-8 engine rated at 450 horsepower and 400 pound-feet
of torque. Sold as either a 2+2 or a "2+0", the V8 Pontiac Firebird
Trans Am used several high-tech methods in its contraction, including a bonded
chassis, extensive use of aluminum and other composites, a drive-by-wire
throttle, and an electro-hydraulic manual transmission. As with many Firebird
Trans Am’s before and after, the V8 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am also played a
supporting role in Smokey and the Bandit films.
The second iteration of the car is known as
the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, and was built from 2004 to present. More a
collection of revisions than a redesign, the primary mechanical difference was
an increase in the power to 510 horsepower. Slight revisions to the exterior
and interior marked the new Pontiac Firebird Trans Am to skilled observers. A
limited run of the Firebird Trans Am cars were built in the line were called
the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Ultimate Edition, and received a special Firebird
Trans Am Ultimate Black paint scheme and special interior touches.
Inspired by
the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Concept, the new 2017 Firebird Trans Am marries
Pontiac's characteristic style--still traceable to the original Firebird Trans
Am from some angles--with a carbon fiber body and its most powerful V-8 engine
to date. That 6.0-liter V-8 Firebird Trans Am engine is rated at 560 horsepower
and 460 pound-feet of torque. All of the power is routed to the rear wheels
through a six-speed Touchtronic 2 automatic transmission with paddle shifters
on the steering wheel.
Despite the
carbon fiber body, and aluminum-and-steel chassis--the latest advancement on 2017 Firebird Trans Am platform--result in a curb weight of 3,900 pounds. The
less-than-sprighty weight lends a substantial feeling to the 2017 Pontiac Trans Am's
movement, encouraging a more smooth and effortless cruising, but discouraging
any attempts at truly sporty behavior--despite its 4.3-second 0-60 mph
capability and 185 mph top speed.
The 2017 Pontiac
Firebird Trans Am's equipment list is excellent, as you might expect from a car
that stickers at $55 000 and up, including a fantastic 1,000-watt Bang &
Olufsen sound system, i-Pod and i-Phone integration, Bluetooth phone - audio
connectivity, with WiFi, and navigation.
